Many faces of immigration
Aalto University, Department of Design
2014
This exploratory project was the first that I concluded at the Aalto University, Department of Design as a visiting researcher. Later on this project lead into collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, Centre of Expertise in Integration of Immigrants. This preliminary study intended to collect information on the state of public services for immigrants’ relocation experiences in the host country, for example concerning obtaining a residence permit, registering at the local registration office, finding a job, or learn the language. The visualisation of the service journeys included services that interviewees used before coming to Finland, and during their immigration and integration process in Finland. The study evolved around four themes: experiences before moving to the country, upon individual arrival, interaction with services, and integration. The main focus was services after interviewees’ arrival in Finland and their degree of satisfaction with those services at the different physical locations (e.g. registration office) and touchpoints (e.g. websites, information materials) encountered. For this immigrant service experiences mapping and visualising through service journeys touch-point cards and emoticons were adopted.
