Street Wheels - the design concept of a console and computer educational game by ‘Centre for Smoother Journeys’.

The collective’s approach to the challenge was all about ‘getting in touch with your terrain’. Inspired by time spent with design partner, a wheelchair user, we became aware of the constant challenge of badly designed street surfaces, not always obvious to those on foot. We decided to ‘unite the wheels’ around the common aim of smoother journeys for all those using wheels on pavements and pathways. The output was a simple Internet and smart phone game entitled ‘Street Wheels’ sponsored by the newly formed charity ‘Centre for Smoother Journeys’. The player using both strategy and arcade elements to travel thorough the world’s greatest cities, unlocking new levels and challenges as they progress. Above all, the game has wider aim of raising awareness of the importance of terrain and obstacles when using wheels e.g. wheelchair users, or skateboarder’ would encounter on a given day; and to broaden understanding of how we all get around the streets with seeking to bring together a community, ‘united in wheels’ and committed to ironing out our pavements.
Street Wheels won the Judges' Award in the 24 Hour Design Challenge at the 2011 Include Conference held at the Royal College Of Art, London.
The Collective’ team consist of Simon Grisdale, Garikoitz Iruretagoiena, Tulio Maximo, Ben Mortimer, Kunal Nandi and Helena Sustar.
Street Wheels – a game that allows anyone on wheels (from skateboards to baby buggies) to ‘get in touch with your terrain’ and up your navigational skills and awareness of the importance of surfaces by playing the game at progressively difficult levels.
