BA Service Design Project Course / Palvelumuotoilu - 7 ECTS

This course is for design students who already have certain knowledge on service design to widen their service design experiences in a real project setting. Students are developing theirs learning and capabilities on service design via: 1) intensive familiarisation with the topic via guest lectures and company visits; 2) practical project with the framed topic inside the theme, which gives the student possibility to find their own project focus or even re-brief their original brief; 3) several types of background and service design related reading; 4) case analysis of the relevant existing services; 5) presenting assigned weekly reading material on the innovative way to other students and 6) writing weekly learning diary reflecting on their own practical project work, reading materials and lectures. The lecturer provides a mixture of theoretical, practical and experimental lectures.

The course is adopting Design Council double diamond design process consisting of four stages discover, define, develop and deliver. Students start the project from investigating bigger picture by adopting systemic design tools like three horizons, service ecology and service design tools like actors/stakeholders communication map. Furthermore, interviews, on-line surveys, are utilised to collect data related to different user groups in identifying their needs. The process includes investigations of contextual potentials and challenges, explorations and the co-design session of potential design solutions. The outcomes consist from the outline of the process, insights, design drivers and solution concepts. In 7 weeks students follow the following process:

Week 1: Discover: Dive into the topic

Week 2: Frame your focus: Background study and the first plan for the project

Week 3: Define: Rethinking and start action

Week 4: User study action (Mid term presentation)

Week 5: Develop: Visualisation and prototyping

Week 6: Making sense & creating ideas

Week 7: Deliver: Finalising (Final presentation)

to utilize expertise in service design, development and innovation through the work on real project

  • to demonstrate service design knowledge on applying the use of systemic and service design tools on practical project

  • to learn how to manage the work inside the group

  • to be able to reflect on their individual work inside of the group, project work, reading material and lectures by writing their learning portfolio

“After the presentation I felt a bit surreal, because the course had been very intensive from beginning to the end, especially the final week or so. I feel I learned a lot from the course and can now use confidently the service design tools taught during the course. For next summer I have gotten a internship in service design firm and it will be very interesting to see what sort of service design tools they will use there and do they differ from what I have learned and understood in this course. All in all this was a great course and I really enjoyed the experience.”
